Does anyone here know much about DJ Jeeps or where to look for help restoring one? I’m quickly realizing this project might be bigger than I thought. Any advice or resources would be amazing.
@Kieran
From what I’ve found, DJs are kind of like modified CJs. Mine is a 3-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive instead of the manual 4-wheel drive CJs. The body’s different too.
This one was built after Jeep was sold to AMC, so I’m guessing it has some differences from the Kaiser Willys models.
Just focus on getting the drivetrain and engine working well. Once it’s running, drive it as is. It’ll turn heads for sure.
What’s your goal with this project? Are you planning a full restoration or just getting it running again?
DJs are definitely quirky but really cool.

I want to restore it. The previous owner was a mechanic and did some weird things to it, like adding what looks like a kill switch and capping off some tubes. I’m not a mechanic, so I can’t even identify some parts.
There are other basic problems too. I’m trying to clean up rust and get patches welded, but I’m stuck on how to remove some things. For example, I can’t figure out how to take off the windshield wiper arms, dashboard knobs, or even the steering wheel.
@Hadi
Since DJs were originally made for postal service contracts, they’ve got a lot of unique features, especially with the body. Most were right-hand drive and 2WD, so there’s a lot of odd bits compared to CJs.
You should try to find someone local who’s familiar with Jeeps. Working with someone could help you avoid breaking things and make the process easier.
Jeeps are pretty straightforward overall. They were built quickly on an assembly line, so nothing’s too complicated. I might have a CJ manual somewhere that could help. It won’t be exact but should give you a decent start.
That’s a beautiful piece. Can’t wait to see it restored!
I’ve worked on a couple of DJs before. They are unique and have a lot of differences from CJ5s in unexpected ways. The high school students I volunteer with took a couple to Mexico and drove them back to the States. What model are you working on? DJ5A, DJ5C, or something else?
