What is this fluid… can someone help?

I found this fluid leaking under my car. Here’s a picture:

Can anyone tell me what it might be? I’m feeling a bit worried and could use some advice.

This looks like brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. Sometimes people top it up when they see the fluid at the low mark, but that happens naturally as the brake pads wear down. If the reservoir gets overfilled, it can overflow when the pistons are pushed back to replace the pads.

Is this on the front passenger side? The master cylinder is usually on the driver’s side, though.

Good point! Thanks for explaining.

This reminds me of hydraulic fluid from a leaking motor mount. Some Grand Cherokee mounts are filled with this type of fluid. Not sure if they did the same for transverse engines, though.

Interesting idea! Thanks for sharing!

That was my first thought, too.

It could be brake fluid, especially if someone topped it off when the pads were really worn. When you push the pistons back during a pad change, there might be too much fluid, and it can spill out.

The fluid can evaporate over time but will collect dirt and dust if left alone. If you’re learning to work on brakes, flushing the system and bleeding the brakes can help you keep everything clean and running smoothly. It’s also a good way to swap in fresh fluid.

If you’re unsure, using a tool like a power bleeder makes it easier.

Thank you for your advice!

I’d guess it’s power steering fluid since the pump is right above that area. Brake fluid is on the opposite side, and oil would be darker and further underneath. Maybe take it to a mechanic to confirm.

To me, that doesn’t look like brake fluid or oil.
