Hello,
I bought a Certified Pre-Owned 2017 Grand Cherokee in July, and it currently has 17,000 miles. When I started the vehicle today, the check engine light came on, and the screen displayed “Service Shifter.” Can you explain what this means? My dealer can’t schedule me until December 31. Will this issue be covered under the warranty? Also, is it safe to drive the vehicle until my appointment?
Thank you!

You might find some useful information in these discussions. It seems this issue occurs from time to time, and you should be able to drive the vehicle as is. Some people have had success by disconnecting the battery for five minutes and reconnecting it to clear the message. If that doesn’t work, the shifter or bezel might need to be replaced, which may or may not be covered under warranty. I’m not sure. There was also a time when the repair parts weren’t available.

Did you start the vehicle and quickly put it into gear? I’ve experienced this a couple of times with my Dodge/Jeep vehicles. Each time, I believe it was caused by doing something too quickly, though I couldn’t replicate it. My advice is to make sure the dealer logs the issue in your records and not stress about it. However, always double-check that the car is in Park when you think it is. Be sure to read the manual thoroughly, especially if you’re coming from a different brand, as the electronic shifter works differently.

Ahh the old obligatory jeepcares response lol. Let me save everybody sometime unless your car has warranty or maxcare warranty thru them? they will care. otherwise, go kick rocks

Not sure if you had the same shifter as me but I had a similar issue on my 2014, replacing the gear shift knob fixed my issue
