Slow starts after warmed up

My Jeep’s original 5.2 V8 has over 258k miles. Recently, the fuel gauge stopped working, and it struggles to start after being turned off and on again.

The rear main seal needs replacing, but I don’t know how to do it. It also smokes a bit on start-up and when reversing.

Any ideas or suggestions on fixing these issues would be greatly appreciated.

High mileage Jeep 5.2 V8 rocks! Here’s the quick fix:

  • Crankshaft sensor for starting trouble (easy DIY).
  • Check Jeep forums for funky fuel gauge.
  • Mechanic for smoking (valve seals/rings).
  • Rear main seal - DIY with video tutorials if you’re brave, mechanic otherwise.

Replacing the rear main seal is a bigger job, best left to a mechanic.
