M151 military jeeps in Vietnam with armor and mounted M60s… anyone got details?

These jeeps were used by US soldiers in the Vietnam War. They’ve got armor and M60 machine guns mounted. Were these custom-built or just modified versions of standard jeeps?

Does the gun mount change position or is it just the angle in the pictures?

The mount position is different because these are separate jeeps. Vehicles like this were usually modified on-site or in small workshops, not built in a factory.

Do these have run-flat tires? Was the engine armored? The front looks mostly like a regular jeep except for the added plating.

Probably just a regular jeep with some armor added on top. The rest is likely standard issue.

What’s interesting is how they all have unique nicknames. That’s pretty unusual for non-aircraft equipment that’s supposed to be standardized.

That was common for gun trucks in Vietnam. You should check out the ones built on deuce-and-a-half trucks… those were next level. They were used for convoy protection.
