Lost my keys to my 1976 CJ-7… any tips or tricks to start it or replace it?

Hey, I’ve lost the keys to my 1976 CJ-7 and I’m trying to figure out a way to start it or replace the keys. Anyone got any ideas or tricks to get it going?

You can use a screwdriver between the positive battery post on the solenoid. This will start the engine, then you can replace the lock cylinder as suggested. Just make sure it’s in neutral or park.

Have you tried replacing the ignition cylinder or contacting a locksmith? If not, you could hotwire it or use a screwdriver.

Not yet. I was hoping to find some old school security weaknesses from the 70s that might be easier to work with.

If the keyway is worn enough, you could probably use a rake key for that type and try to get it started.

Is the key on the dash or the steering column? If it’s on the dash, you can move the coil wire to the hot side of the starter solenoid and jump it to crank the engine. You could do this with the steering column too, but the steering wheel will stay locked.

@Brynn
It’s on the steering wheel unfortunately.

Replacing the lock cylinder will involve removing the steering wheel. You’ll need a tool to press down on the wheel to remove the lock ring, and then use a puller to take the wheel off. Be careful not to break or lose any plastic parts for the horn or cylinder lever. You might want to just use a locksmith to make a key instead.

I’ve removed the steering wheel before and lost the horn pieces, but I think that’s the route I’ll have to take.

Good luck with that!

Dead jeep com might have the horn parts you need.

There’s a switch on the lower steering column that connects to a rod from the key switch. That rod hooks into a slider on the switch. You can remove the switch and pop the rod out. Then, you can use a screwdriver to move that slider and start the engine. Here’s a link to the switch: link
