Hey Jeepers,
I have a 2006 LJ, and I’m looking to replace or upgrade the rear bumper. I need one that includes a spare tire swing-out and is tow-rated. It seems that finding one with a tow rating is the tricky part. I came across a Rock Hard bumper on Quadratec, but the price seems a bit high (see picture below). Is that the typical cost for a bumper like this? Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks!
Bumper manufacturers are hesitant to “tow rate” their bumpers due to liability concerns. I’ve towed with several US-made bumpers and used frame tie-ins to ensure they’re securely attached. In my opinion, tire carrier bumpers add unnecessary weight.
In my opinion, $1,300 for a bumper is ridiculous. That’s the kind of price JK/JL/JT owners are willing to pay just to collect more ducks. You should contact Dirt Works and have a bumper made; it should cost around $600-$700, depending on the options.
Definitely get tie-ins. $1,300 for a swing-out bumper is actually a reasonable price, especially for one from a reputable brand like theirs. If you go cheaper, you risk it not holding up well. I’ve had a few “cheap” options that arrived with dents and bends just from shipping.
If you’re looking to tow, I’d buy a tow hitch. Then get a purpose built spare tire carrier. And finally, get a rear bumper intended only as a bumper. Most reliable option, bumpers with the spare tire carrier weaken and sag over time
I am not doubting Motobuilt’s quality, but $1,500 seems high for a TJ/LJ rear bumper. It’s unfortunate that most companies have shifted focus to JL owners, who often have more money and less knowledge. JCR Offroad used to make an incredibly sturdy rear bumper for us, but now they seem more focused on JK and JL models
