Jeep 4.0 oil capacity

So, I’ve had my Jeep for about two months now and I recently performed an oil change shortly after buying it. However, when I looked up the oil capacity, I stumbled upon some conflicting information. Most sources state it’s 6 quarts, while a few others mention it’s 5 quarts. I even found one popular repair manual that suggests it’s 5 quarts.

Given that my Jeep is still new to me, I’ve been keeping a close eye on everything and listening for any unusual noises or rattles to familiarize myself with my XJ. I’ve been checking the oil level frequently and noticed that I’m consistently in the safe zone despite only using 5 quarts of oil.

My dipstick isn’t aftermarket, so that rules out any issues with it. I have a 1996 XJ Sport, which should have the same 4.0 engine as most XJs. I don’t have a factory manual either. Has anyone else experienced similar results? What are your thoughts on this?

Hello I work as a mechanic at my home garage in Colorado.

I have worked with a 1998 XJ. 6 quarts is what the factory manual calls for. However, I recommend using 5 quarts.
Since the chances of a having defective dipstick is ruled out, I think you should start using 5 quarts since it is not excessive,

Hold on tight, fellow Jeep enthusiast! Don’t be fooled by the engine name - the Jeep 4.0, that legendary six-cylinder beast, actually has a oil capacity of 6 quarts, not 4. That 4.0 refers to the engine’s displacement, not the oil it holds. So, when it’s time for an oil change, grab 6 fresh quarts of your favorite 5W-20 or 5W-30 synthetic oil and keep that 4.0 purring!
