If I were to get my top repainted by a shop, could they replicate / keep the texturing? Has anyone repainted their top?

Well…Unless they sprayed it really thick, multiple coats, you couldn’t get rid of the texture if you tried. It’s kind of built in…

Well usually most shops sand it to make sure the paint doesn’t peel off unless you go to macco or other cheap shops so there wouldn’t be any texture left

Well that’s what I was hoping, I like the texture and don’t want to lose it. Would the shop be able to just spray over it and the texture would stay?

Yes, they could scuff sand with a scotch Brite. It would give enough tooth for paint to stick well, however it will not remove any imperfections if there are any. Hope that helps.

Why don’t you find a shop near you and give them a call? I think this is something you should leave to an actual professional vs a general public forum. You have zero idea who’s giving you information.

I’ll tell you this much, I damn near wore out a DA sander trying to smooth mine to paint it flame red. Color match was only on a Sahara back then.

Good info. I was planning to do that over the winter. I knew to expect a lot of work, but daaaaaammmmmmnnnn, a worn out DA wasn’t on the meal ticket.

Body man here, yes you can have the texture reapplied, SEM and 3m make paintable aerosol texture coatings that can match the OEM texture, then be painted a satin black. It’s a pain in the tail to get it even on a big top like that. For what it’s worth, I shoot rhino liner on all my jeep tops if I want the texture. It’s way more durable too.

I second the rhino liner recommendation, you could do it yourself for $200 if you’re DIY inclined.

As i’m on that point as a winter project, how does it get applied? I found Buckets and spray cans of rhino liner, what’s better?

How to prepare it, just sand it slightly?

I think the 2 part plus tint spray kits will give you the best results. I’ve seen some people just sand for surface prep, I’ve seen others use self-etching primer, although I think that’s more for applying to metal. It’s definitely a permanent modification though, the stuff is super durable and would be hard to remove.

I bought a used one for mounting my Front Runner Roofrack on it, and it has a few scratches and had a few spray paint spots on it.

I plan to keep it that way, so permanent sounds good :+1:

Nice! I’m about to pull the trigger on doing the body of my TJ with it, the paint is in rough shape and I’m ready for a color change. Let me know how yours goes!

I’m curious what you find out OP.

I just ran outside and checked my 2024 Wrangler top and it’s plastic and smooth finish. I’m curious what Jeep year you have because my 1972 Chevrolet Blazer has that exact texture and the Blazer restoration is my retirement project (dated my late wife in the Blazer in 1979 - yes, same Blazer). I have wondered about how to repaint the Blazer top as original with the same texture…

Damn I didn’t know they went smooth finish on the new ones, I haven’t really checked the tops on the new ones before; kind of something you don’t think about! Lol
But this is a 2004, I’m pretty sure 98-06 wrangler hard tops had this texturing. I had a 2008 JKU with a hard top and it had some sort of texture on it but it was different than this.

Do you have a subreddit at all that you’ll be posting your blazer project on? Would be cool to keep up with it!

I have a 2024 hard top and it’s not glassy smooth; there is a texture to it!

There are variations on the spatter. It is a human process, so it is not uniform between the operators.

@Corey
I was just thinking along the same lines for my JKU. only I want to paint just the top of the top white and wondering how easy to DIY.

That’s insane, that’s my exact plan, I want to paint it black but have the middle on top be white. I don’t want to go full FJ on the top, but just mostly the center section.
