How to Switching from 2H to 4H in Jeep Wrangler Automatic?

Hey folks,

I’m relatively new to off-roading and have a question about switching my Jeep Wrangler from 2H to 4H mode. It’s an automatic transmission, and I’m not entirely sure of the correct procedure. Could someone walk me through the steps involved? Specifically, how do I safely transition from 2H to 4H without causing any damage to the vehicle? Any tips or advice on when to engage this mode and what to look out for would be greatly appreciated.

When the vehicle is parked, you can easily transition from 2H to 4H. Sometimes the Jeep won’t engage unless you give it some room to move. Additionally, Wranglers can be put into 4 low when traveling at a maximum speed of 15 mph. To enter 4 low, most 4x4 vehicles must come to a complete stop. RUN IT IN A 4X4 ON DRY PAVEMENT, PLEASE. The road must be muddy, snow-covered, or moist. The drive train will get bundled up. Enjoy these images of mountain goats in mud or snow.

Make sure you’re driving at a speed below 55 mph. Ideally, you should be driving slowly, around 2-3 mph, to make the shift smoother.

While driving, simply pull the 4WD lever from 2H to 4H. In most Jeep Wranglers, this can be done without stopping the vehicle, known as “shift-on-the-fly.”
