Does anyone know a simple way to change the headlight bulb on the right side of a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee? I looked online and found advice to replace it from the wheel area. But I couldn’t remove the bulb because I couldn’t grip it to twist it out of the plastic cover. Any suggestions? I ended up taking it to the dealer and they charged me $120, so I want to avoid that next time.
Replacing the low beam bulb on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee can be accomplished at home with a few tools and some guidance. There are two primary methods, depending on accessibility and comfort level:
Option 1: Accessing Through the Engine Bay (Easier for Driver’s Side)
- Open the Hood: Locate the hood release lever inside your Jeep and lift the hood. Secure it with the hood prop rod.
- Find the Headlight Assembly: Identify the headlight assembly on the side requiring bulb replacement (driver’s side is typically simpler). It’s the housing unit behind the headlight.
- Access the Bulb Cover: Depending on your trim level, the bulb cover may be accessible by twisting it counter-clockwise. Alternatively, you might need to remove the air filter box for better reach. Refer to your Jeep’s manual for specific guidance.
- Remove the Bulb: Once you can access the bulb cover, remove it by turning or unclipping it as per the manual. This exposes the low beam bulb.
- Disconnect the Plug: Carefully disconnect the electrical plug from the back of the bulb.
- Replace the Bulb: Handle the new bulb by the base to avoid touching the glass. Gently remove the old bulb and insert the new one securely.
- Reassemble: Reconnect the electrical plug, replace the bulb cover (twist or clip it back), and if necessary, reinstall the air filter box as instructed.
- Close the Hood: Ensure everything is properly secured, then close and latch the hood shut.
Option 2: Accessing Through the Wheel Well (Passenger Side)
- Turn the Wheel: To access the passenger side headlight assembly, turn the steering wheel sharply in the opposite direction (turn right to reach the passenger side).
- Remove the Wheel Well Liner: Some Jeep Grand Cherokee models offer access through a removable panel in the wheel well liner. Refer to your manual for detachment instructions if needed.
- Follow Steps 4-8 from Option 1: Once you can reach the back of the headlight assembly, proceed with steps 4-8 from Option 1 to replace the bulb and reassemble everything.
Important Tips:
- Consult your Jeep Grand Cherokee’s manual for specific instructions and any trim-level variations.
- If uncertain, consider consulting a qualified mechanic for assistance.
- Dispose of the used bulb responsibly, utilizing recycling programs offered by many auto parts stores.
- Consider replacing both low beam bulbs simultaneously to maintain consistent brightness on both sides, as headlights can dim over time.
To change the low beam light bulb on a 2014 Grand, first, remove the cover on the low beam bulbs by turning it counterclockwise. Then, take out the headlight bulb along with the low beams or H11 bulbs marked with blue.
Replacing the headlight bulb on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee can indeed be a bit tricky.
But watch the following video explaining everything and you will thank me later.
No worries, I’m here to help! Could you describe or show me the aluminum box with the weird clips? It sounds like you might be dealing with a different type of headlight assembly or bulb setup than what you’re used to. Once I have a better understanding of what you’re dealing with, I can provide more specific guidance on how to replace the headlight bulb.
Sorry if I should be in another sub for this question, but I’m stumped and don’t want to start tearing things apart for a simple bulb swap. (My driver’s side headlight is out)
I’m mechanically inclined and have replaced many headlight and taillight bulbs on other vehicles …
I don’t know what I’m looking at here (2nd photo) and this aluminum box with weird clips doesn’t match what’s shown in the owners manual or the half dozen YouTube videos I’ve watched.
Everything I’ve read says “remove the access panels, twist and unplug the bulb and replace it”.
What am I missing?
Since I don’t own and never have owned a 2014 Grand Cherokee. You will probably need to access the rear of the headlight assembly. There is probably a retaining ring that will need to be rotated counterclockwise to release, then remove the bulb and unplug. Plug the new bulb in and reverse the procedure.
