Anyone tried adding CarPlay to a 99 TJ?

Wow, 326k miles on your TJ! Did you rack up most of those yourself?

Thanks! We’ve put about half those miles on it since I got it back in 2013. It’s on its second engine now, a Jasper reman. Last spring, I had to replace some body mounts and patch up some steel, but otherwise, I just keep the frame painted and pour diff oil into it every couple of years.

@Grayden
Diff oil in the frame? That’s a new one for me, but hey, it seems to work!

Yup, that and dropping the skid plate every year to grease the connection points has kept it going strong. It’s driven in PA winters, never garaged, and still kicking. Good luck with yours!

Was your check engine light on before or after you added CarPlay?

It’s been on for about 10 years now—at least 100k miles. It’s just an evap leak and nothing near the radio wiring.

Haha, I figured it’d be a yes. Congrats on the CarPlay setup, though!

Thanks!

Is that an amp mounted on the passenger side of the console?

It’s actually a powered sub. It’s a small one—here’s the link: Pioneer TS-WX010A

Man, the TJ design is still such a classic, both inside and out.

Looks awesome! I’m thinking about doing this with my ‘03 Rubicon.

I’d say go for it—it’s definitely worth it.

What model is that? It looks like it fits perfectly.

You’ll need to do some trimming and get a double DIN kit. I used a HECASA dash kit from Amazon and the Sony XAV AX3200. Hope that helps!

@Grayden
Thanks!

I did something similar with my ‘99 XJ using an Alpine unit and a Crutchfield dash kit. I didn’t even realize there were other options!

Got links to the products you used?

Sure thing! Here’s what I used:

  • Sony XAV AX3200 head unit
  • HECASA double DIN kit for Jeep TJ
  • A random backup camera with good reviews
  • Kicker speakers all around
  • Pioneer TS-WX010A sub

I soldered all the connections and used heat-shrink covers for the wires. I also used a circuit tester to map out factory connections and check speaker wire polarity. Feel free to ask if you have more questions!

@Grayden
I did a similar double DIN swap a couple years ago. Totally worth it, though I wish I had gone with one that had a volume knob!

I did this upgrade too. Add a wireless CarPlay dongle and bam, you’ve basically got a 2025 Wrangler.

Sony XAV-AX3200 is a great option for a full-size CarPlay unit without cutting up the dash.
