What could be causing code P2181, a fluctuating temperature gauge, and misfiring?

I’ve searched through past posts and the internet (I might even be getting into conspiracy theories about reptilians now), but I haven’t found anything with this specific issue.

All of a sudden yesterday, the engine light turned on and my car started shaking randomly—sometimes while moving and sometimes when stopped. The temperature gauge is bouncing up and down, and the only code it’s showing is P2181.

I don’t have much money and I’m okay with trying to fix it myself, but I need some guidance on where to start. I’ve read that it could be anything from the thermostat to the air intake, or even issues with the transmission, radiator, or spark plugs. It’s a lot to take in.

Can someone please help me figure out what to do?

Check your coolant levels and thermostat first, they could be causing overheating and engine shake. Also, inspect spark plugs and ignition coils for wear. These steps might solve the issues without breaking the bank.

It sounds like your car might have a cooling system issue, just like mine did once (shaky car, temp gauge going wild). Check your coolant level first, then maybe look up thermostat replacement for your car model online. Auto parts stores can also read your engine code and offer some advice.
