Does anyone know what these lights are for? They don’t turn on, day or night, and I can’t find any switch for them. I’m sure they’re supposed to have lights, as I’ve checked.
I drive a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Also, does anyone know how to make my main headlights brighter? I can barely see 10 feet ahead at night, and it’s making it almost impossible to drive.
Those are probably your DRLs (daytime running lights), which use a 3157 bulb.
They should come on when you shift out of park, as long as the main headlights aren’t on. Your headlight switch on the dash is likely a rotary one. If it’s like most Jeeps, from left to right, it goes: Auto - Off - Parking Lights - Headlights, and you push in to activate fog lights.
The lever for high beams should push forward to keep the brights on, and pulling it toward you flashes them.
If you’re struggling to see, it could be that your headlights aren’t actually on. DRLs don’t include taillights or marker lights and won’t give you enough light for night driving. Auto lights don’t always work like you’d expect, even if the dash lights up.
@Harlan
None of those settings seem to make them work. I tried all positions on the rotary switch while in drive, with my dad checking from outside, and nothing changed.
We usually keep the lights on ‘Auto,’ but they don’t provide enough light to see very far.
Could it be an issue with the electronics or maybe a blown fuse?
Those look like your driving lights. They only come on when you shift into drive and turn off when the headlights are on. They also turn off temporarily when you signal (like the right one will turn off if the right signal is on).
I’ve had issues with the driver’s side one in my Cherokee burning out constantly, and it’s a pain to replace because you have to take out the air intake tube to reach the bulb. At least it’s only a 3157 bulb, which isn’t expensive to replace.
They’re probably your high beams. The turn signal lever should let you push forward to keep them on or pull back to flash them. It looks like your lenses might be foggy, so polishing them could help, or you could try a brighter halogen bulb. I wouldn’t recommend installing HID or LED bulbs in there, though—just stick to halogens for this setup.
