I was hiking back from the Flatirons in Boulder and found this awesome classic Jeep during a photo shoot. It’s a 1972-1973 Jeep Commando station wagon. The owner has worked on it for two years and now plans to sell it. It has a roof that comes off, an 8-cylinder engine, and a 3-speed transmission with a differential gearbox. The owner had some interesting stories to share about the Jeep. I really wish I had time to sit down and chat with him over coffee, he must have some great stories!
Very cool. People like that can be so interesting to talk to. You can learn so much from folks who have spent so much time with these Jeeps.
I had a neighbor who was really into Jeeps. My first car was an old beat-up CJ7, and he’d help my dad and me with whatever we were working on. Once, we pulled the transmission for a rebuild, I put it all back in and got everything ready. Fired it up, shifted it into gear, and it didn’t move. Of course, I freaked out (just like most 16-year-olds do). I knocked on his door, and he came over, put the transfer case in gear, and off I went. Haha!
Oh my gosh so cute
I’d love one of these.
Goin Commando, nice.
I love old Jeeps. This one is a real beauty.
I know about SJs, but I don’t know a lot about the Jeepsters. They did use similar drivetrains, though. If this one is from the early 70s, it might have a Buick 350 or AMC 360 with a TH400 transmission (if it’s automatic), and probably a Dana 20 transfer case. Maybe Dana 27 in the front and Dana 44 in the rear? Not sure about the Wagoneers. Differential gearbox? That’s new to me, but maybe they mean a Mile Marker overdrive.
Nice!
