I have a 2003 Limited with the 4.7 H.O. and the 247 transfer case. I replaced the original dead case with a used 247, and everything works fine now. However, it seems the transfer case loses its prime after sitting. When I park in muddy conditions, the back tires spin for about 10 seconds before the front tires engage. After a few minutes of sitting, it takes another 10 seconds for the front tires to engage again. If I drive around the block, it engages immediately. Is this behavior normal, or could it indicate a problem with the transfer case? I also have the old 247 case and plan to work on it with a 242 from a 4.0, as 242 HD cases are hard to find.

When your front wheels take a long time to engage while you’re in mud or after the vehicle has been stationary, it’s not normal. This issue might be due to problems with the transfer case fluid, the transfer case itself, or some electronic components. You should check the fluid levels, look for any leaks, and try testing different drive modes. Although you considered replacing the transfer case, keep in mind that it’s a major job that requires significant effort.
